The Mthatha businessman who was shot and killed in his driveway at his house on Saturday, August 13 has been identified as Zwelinzima ‘PK’ Dweba (40).

Dweba was the owner of the So What Lounge, Highness Night Club and various other small businesses in Mthatha.

The MEC for Finance, Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Mlungisi Mvoko has expressed his shock on the murder of Dweba who was shot multiple times outside his home in Indwe Street, Southernwood.

“The killing of Dweba is a great loss, not only to his family and friends but to the government of the Eastern Cape and her people. PK, as he was affectionately known, was behind many successful events that had tourism, entertainment and economic benefits to the community of Mthatha and surrounding areas,” said Mvoko.

He added that they witnessed his contribution when their entity, Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA), partnered with him in one of his many events, Native Summer Party. He said many young people had received employment through his events and business interests.

“It is evident through messages of condolences and voices expressing deepest sense of agony on many social media platforms, that Dweba had touched so many lives. His passing would therefore have detrimental effects to those who benefited from him, including the economy of the Eastern Cape.”

Mvoko said it was more appalling that Dweba lost his life through brutal acts of crime.

According to him he had noted with concern numerous reports of killing of businesspeople from various industries across the province.

“In a country and in a province where the economy is struggling, businesspeople who economically support communities where their businesses operate should be celebrated, supported and not be killed. These sort of crimes and many others, are an economic sabotage. We add our voice as part of the people of this province to call for swift action in all these unnatural deaths.”

Mvoko has sent his condolences to the family of Dweba, his friends and all those who are affected by his death.

The Secretary General of Eastern Cape Chamber of Business, Dr Andile Nontso, said the OR Tambo District Chamber of Business and all local business chambers had learnt with shock about the untimely death of Dweba.

“He was a young and bright businessman with a great future. He created jobs for many people in this district,” said Nontso.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, said police in Mthatha had implemented the 72-hour activation plan as they hunt for the suspect(s) involved in the murder.

Dweba was shot at about 20:55 in his driveway.

“At the scene, the deceased sustained several gunshot wounds in the upper body, and was lying next to his vehicle. At this stage, a motive for the attack is unknown,” Nkohli said.

He said police urged anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Xolisa Mtwa on 071 475 1871.
