A TEACHER from Mvenyane Senior Secondary School, Qhubekani Maphosa, obtained first place in the category of excellence in physical sciences (FET) teaching in the National Provincial Teachers Awards (NPTA) ceremony, which was hosted at the Mandla Makupula Institute in East London, recently.

Mvenyane Senior Secondary falls under the Alfred Nzo West District.

The awards were hosted by the Department of Education, with the aim of motivating teachers. Maphosa said he was grateful that God had taken him so far, as on his own ability he would not have done so.

“I am humbled also the way the NTA organisers at all levels put such a developmental programme together, which recognises the daily effort that we put in to ensure that the child gets the education they deserve,” said Maphosa, who had never been nominated before.

He added that he could not leave behind his colleagues, both in his category, as well as in other fields, as they had been together in this journey.

“I create a platform where we discuss the reasons for doing subjects, the career choices in the subject, and this creates a thirst for success. Once the learners develop a dream for passing the subject, they become responsible for their academic path and the journey begins,” he said.

He encouraged other educators that when given an opportunity like this, they should take it as it is developmental and at the end there is always something to learn and become more an informed educator.
