Eastern Department of Education officials, former learners and members of the community joined in on festivities as Ndema Senior Secondary School in Luxomo location, in Tsomo, hosted a ceremony to toast the 100% matric pass rate for its class of 2021, on March 18.

The school last achieved the feat of a 100% matric pass rate 46 years ago, in 1976, according to principal, Vuyisa Bukula.

The 100% matric pass rate was achieved with only 23 learners, as the school had a long history of poor matric results, which resulted in low numbers of registered learners, a trend that is slowly changing as the school has shown an upward trajectory in its matric pass rate since 2019.

“The main reason for hosting the celebration was not only to celebrate the feat achieved by the class of 2021 but also to make it known that the bad history of poor matric results at our school has been erased and we are now writing a new story for ourselves of a school that is able to compete with the best in the province, as demonstrated by our class of 2021,” said Bukula.

Bukula joined the school in March 2021 and has been instrumental in its turnaround that saw it achieving the milestone.

It is hoped that the feat achieved by the class of 2021 will market the school to other prospective learners and reverse the decline in numbers of registered learners that has occurred over the past years.

Out of the 23 history-making cohort, 13 achieved bachelor passes, seven with diplomas and three passed with higher certificate admission.
