MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Ntombovuyo Nkopane, officially handed over Mdunyelwa Ngwityi Primary School, formerly known as Lower Ngqungqu Junior Secondary School, in Mqanduli, to the MEC for the Department of Education, Fundile Gade, and the community of that area, last week.
The school, built for R34.8 million, was implemented by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
Gade said that out of 200 schools built through the Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI) in the country, 165 currently are in the Eastern Cape, meaning this province is the major beneficiary of this ASIDI project.
According to him, since 2019, they have handed over more than 58 schools.
Currently, they have seven that must be handed over between now and January 2024.
“We do have the school safety programmes anchored on the broad government perspective on Safe Communities. We have re-introduced the fencing programmes at 191 schools to protect these properties.
“However, we are calling on the people to protect these investments for future generations to come.”
The Chairperson for the School Governing Body (SGB) from Mdunyelwa Ngwityi Primary School, Reverend Loyiso Mphathelwa, said they will ensure that they keep this school in good condition.
“We are happy even though we are still asking for more because the school is not fenced.
“It will be easy for those who are mischievous to enter and vandalise it, but we will try our best to protect it,” said Ngwityi.
