The office of the Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Barry Madolo, has expressed shock and anger following the fatal shooting of one of its seasoned prosecutors Ntsikelelo McAllister Ntlekeni, who was a district court prosecutor, based in Butterworth Court.

The 49-year-old married father, who joined the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) as an intern in 2001, was acting as the regional court prosecutor at the time of his untimely passing on Thursday, March 14.

The NPA and the South African Police Services (SAPS), are working around the clock to ensure that the gunmen who accosted Mr. Ntlekeni, and those who may be involved in his tragic shooting are brought to book, as investigations are at a sensitive stage.

“According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was with other people at New Rest location near Butterworth, when he went out of the house. When he was returning inside the house, he was followed by two balaclava-clad unknown males and shot in his upper body,” said NPA regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.

According to Tyali, the University of Transkei (Walter Sisulu University) graduate started his prosecuting career in the Western Cape.

He will be laid to rest at his home in Lubhacweni Location, in KwaBhaca (formerly Mount Frere) on Friday, March 22.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, March 20, in Butterworth Court.

Tyali said Madolo has dispatched a delegation to the slain prosecutor’s family, to offer his condolences and provide the necessary support.

The NPA has conveyed its condolences to friends and colleagues of Ntlekeni.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said the motive for the murder remained unknown and police investigation was ongoing.

“Police are requesting anyone who can assist with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or call the SAPS CrimeStop number on 08600 10111,” Mawisa said.,
