The workshop facilitator for Ziyawamo Arts and Culture Programme, Mzura Khuse from Cape Town, hosted the Ziyawamo Music Workshop at the Mthatha Arts Centre, last week.

According to Khuse, this programme started in 2015, after they saw challenges facing musicians. He said they realised that some of the performers lacked knowledge and were taken advantage of by their managers and recording studios. He said they wanted to educate performers about doing business.

He added that they also wanted to educate them about the opportunities they have so that they could get funding.

“After many people heard us on different radio stations talking about these problems, they asked us to host workshops in the Eastern Cape.

“To ensure that we fulfil their wish, we launched this programme in Gqeberha on January 28.

“We have been to Kariega, Qonce, Mdantsane, and Butterworth, and were in Mthatha last week,” said Khuse.

He said most musicians came from rural areas, which is why they decided to focus in those areas. The workshops were free to attend.

“We will be in Komani and Port Alfred very soon,” he promised.
