NON-PROFIT organisation (NPO) Buyani Maqhawe Foundation, and the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) have donated study guides and calculators to Enoch Mamba Senior Secondary School and Technical Institute, a rural school in Dutywa, which falls under the Mbhashe Local Municipality.
The gifts were delivered to the school on September 16 by the foundation’s chairperson, Phumzile Mamba.
“Schools play a critical role in moulding the future citizens of this country, but students who go to rural schools are often at a disadvantage, with rural schools expected to fulfil their mandate with very limited or no resources at all.
“Therefore, we decided to lend a hand and donate 188 study guides and 30 calculators to the identified rural school,” said Buyani Maqhawe Foundation secretary, Mbeko Mbebe.
He further said the donation was a direct response to the campaign that is aiming at addressing poor performance of students in mathematics and science in schools, especially those in rural areas.
Mamba, while delivering the donation to the school, encouraged students to work hard, as education was a key to their success, while also wishing matriculants best of luck in their upcoming matric examinations.
“Government-supplied textbooks are never adequate for the number of learners we have at the school, so these study guides will fill that shortage and make it even simpler for the students, as they are more concise notes for the learners, compared to reading an entire textbook,” said school principal, Kairuz Gogozayo, in appreciating the donation.
The 188 study guides donated are spread across several subjects, with 80 for English, 65 for mathematics, 19 for accounting, 15 for physical sciences, six for geography and three life science study guides.
The Buyani Maqhawe Development Foundation donated 90 pairs of school shoes to several schools around the Lota area, in Dutywa, in February last year.
