Officials from Ntinga OR Tambo Development Agency, the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) and South African Police Service (SAPS) Stock Theft Unit rolled out an animal branding programme at Cuthwini Village in Lusikisiki, last week.
According to the senior manager for Trading Enterprise Ntinga OR Tambo Development Agency, Mlungiseleli Zilimbola, this is an ongoing programme conducted by Ntinga, DRDAR and SAPS to assist farmers in OR Tambo to brand their animals for various reasons, such as the prevention of stock theft, and for animal identification purposes in case of disputes.
He said that the Cuthwini Animal Branding Programme was championed by the chairperson for ILambasi Farming Co-Op, led by Mxolisi Luthuli.
“Local farmers who are also members of the co-op came in numbers to ensure that their animals are identifiable and easily traceable,” said Zilimbola.
Headman for Cuthwini Village, Mpongo Mdiya, said they were happy that Ntinga and DRDAR continue to assist them with farming programmes.
“We encourage all local farmers to brand their animals, although some are still reluctant, but will not stop persuading them as this is the right thing to do,” he said.
Farms Manager from Ntinga OR Tambo Development Agency, Nontlantla Matatshi, confirmed that 118 animals were branded in this event.
She said that with branded animals, emerging farmers can supply uMzikantu Red Meat Abattoir, as the enterprise does not accept animals that are not branded.
Animal Health technician from DRDAR, Nondyebo Fumba, confirmed that in order for farmers to apply for animal branding they need to have animals, a stock card from a vet office, and must follow vet vaccination programmes to update stock card.
Each farmer must complete the application form available from DRDAR offices, Ntinga OR Tambo Offices or download them online from www.dalrad.gov.za.
