An Mthatha-born author has published his fifth book, which is his second novel, after noticing and researching about infertility in marriages.

Yamkela Ntwalana, from Kwa-Lindile, has been writing since his high school days at Khanyisa High School in Mthatha, and only writes in isiXhosa.

“After seeing a lot of marriages collapse due to infertility, I decided to do research on the causes. There is a stereotype that it is only females who are infertile and they are always blamed in marriages,” said Ntwalana.

His first novel, Intlungu Yevezandlebe (the pain of a stepchild), won at the South African Literacy Awards in 2002. He was inspired to follow his previous work with his current book, Inzulu le nto (this is deep).

In my research I found that in marriages men are mostly infertile, whether born with it or got it through some problems that I discuss in this novel. The infertility issue I discovered in this novel was through cheating or backstabbing. In this novel I am educating people about infertility and the results of backstabbing.

He added that people were not open to talking about infertility.

Ntwalana studied at Walter Sisulu University and now is a department head of languages at Holy Cross, teaching isiXhosa. Ntwalana, also a poet, is a Holy Cross High School book club founder.

People who want to purchase the book can call or send a WhatsApp message to Ntwalana on 073 390 0921. The price is R200.
