NYANDENI Local Municipality has dedicated the entire month of June to give support to identified youth-owned projects as part of its celebration of Youth Day, which was commemorated yesterday, June 16.
As part of Youth Month, Nyandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Mesuli Ngqondwana, together with the municipality’s special programmes unit (SPU), have handed over equipment and inputs to five identified youth projects, where a total of R300 000 was spent.
“Through this commemoration, the municipality aims at promoting youth development by supporting youth led projects, building their capacity towards owning a lifetime asset and unleashing their potential,” said Nyandeni Local Municipality communications manager, Ncebakazi Kolwane.
Thembie Solutions and Projects founder, Thembelihle Zono, whose project was one of the beneficiaries from the support by Nyandeni Local Municipality, said the intervention could not have come at a better time, with their project on the verge of collapse with only 19 broilers left.
Thembelihle’s project was gifted with 200 coloured broilers, heaters, feed, and vaccines as part of the municipality’s intervention on youth-owned projects on June 8.
“The support from the municipality came at a time when the project was struggling and their timely intervention really invigorated us and made us believe that we can now grow the project into a fully commercial enterprise,” said Zono. “We have already bought 800 bricks.
“We want to build a proper structure for running this poultry business; we have a piece of land that we have secured, and we want to venture into food production as well,” Zono added.
Other youth-owned projects that have benefited from the municipality’s intervention were the Rainy Youth Poultry Project, the Ntlaza rugby tournament and the Mnya Academy sports tournament, hosted on June 16, when each received monetary prizes, medals, and trophies.
The municipality was expected to conclude its youth-owned projects intervention programme by handing over five laptops, two printers and a Wi-Fi router, with 12 months’ worth of data, to Platex Multi-Purpose Internet Café today.
