Former Nyandeni Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Mesuli Ngqondwana, has been elected as the new executive mayor of the OR Tambo District Municipality (ORTDM).
Ngqondwana was elected during the ORTDM inaugural council meeting, following the November 1 local government elections. The meeting was held at the district authority’s council chambers in Southernwood, Mthatha, on December 1. The inaugural council sitting also elected Councillor Ntandokazi Capa, who previously served as council speaker and later mayor at Ingquza Hill Local Municipality, as the new ORTDM council speaker.
Former ORTDM executive mayor, Thokozile Sokhanyile, was elected deputy executive mayor at the same council sitting, while Nonkoliso Ngqongwa was elected council chief whip and former Mhlontlo Local Municipality mayor, Nompumeleo Dywili, was elected Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) chairperson.
“We have a duty as the new leadership and our duty starts with ensuring that we mobilise all internal stakeholders of this municipality behind the vision of this institution.
“We must ensure that our workers, the cleaners on the floors of our buildings, the grass mowers and all those in the lower echelons of our administration see the vision in no less clear terms than we do,” said Ngqondwana in his inaugural address.
Ngqondwana also moved swiftly to announce the councillors appointed as members of his mayoral committee (MMCs) as follows:
- MMC infrastructure, water and sanitation – Mntuwoxolo Ngudle
- MMC corporate services – Nomthandazo Mdledle
- MMC community services – Nontyatyambo Gcingca
- MMC planning, research and intergovernmental relations – Nkosifikile Gqomo
- MMC human settlements – Tandekile Sabisa
- MMC technical services – William Ngozi
- MMC special programmes unit – Nokuthula Mtuku
- MMC budget and treasury – Mandisa Giyose
- MMC rural and economic development – Mlamli Ndabeni
