Director for Strategic Planning and Governance, Bongani Matomela confirmed
the passing of the former mayor for the Ingquza Hill Local Municipality,
Councillor William Ngozi, who passed away on Sunday, September 24, after a
short illness.
Matomela said the O.R Tambo District Municipality (ORTDM) is deeply saddened
by his passing.
Ngozi was a member of the mayoral committee for technical services in the
Ingquza Hill Local Municipality.
He served in various portfolios in the local government sphere for 29
years including being the mayor of the Lusikisiki-based Ingquza Local
Municipality from 2006 to 2011.
Matomela confirmed that the date of the memorial and funeral service
will be communicated in due course.
“He was sworn in as a district councilor after the 2021 local government
elections, he was then appointed as a member of the Mayoral Committee (MAYCO) and
was responsible for the technical services department,” he said.
He added that prior to joining the district he served in the Ngquza Hill
Local Municipality as the speaker and mayor of the local municipality.
“The leadership and the entire community of the district will sorely
miss his contribution to the upliftment of the lives of the people. May his
soul rest in perfect peace,” said Matomela.
He added that the speaker for the O.R Tambo District Municipality,
Councillor Ntandokazi Capa expressed her heartfelt condolences to the Ngozi family
and the ORTDM population in general.
She described Ngozi as a very dedicated leader, a humble servant who
stood by the side of the rural masses no matter what the circumstances were.
Ngozi also served as the councilor of the district since 2011, where he
led various portfolios which included:
- MMC Intergovernmental Relations from 2011 to 2013,
- MMC for Local Economic Development from 2013 to 2015,
- MMC for Infrastructure Services from 2015 to 2016,
- MMC for Water and Sanitation from 2016 to 2019,
- Council Chief Whip from 2019 to 2020,
- MMC for Water and Sanitation from 2020 to 2021
- MMC Technical Services from 2021 to 2023
