Parents whose children attend Mbozisa Primary School, in Mthatha, are worried about the situation at this school, since the classrooms were swept away by heavy storms towards December, last year.
The chairperson for the school governing body (SGB), Simon Magwaxaza, said it was painful to see their children struggling because they did not have classrooms due to this problem.
He said they were worried because parents would take their children to other schools and the department would shut the school down if the number of learners dropped. Magwaxaza said they fear that if the school does not have the number of learners required, the department might merge it with a neighbouring school.
“When the matter was reported to the department, we thought that something would be done very quickly in order to close this gap. They sent us some officials, who came to check the situation, but nothing has happened,” said Magwaxaza.
He said some of them would not have money to transport their children to other schools.
He added that they were still thinking of going around the area, asking for venues they could use as temporary classrooms.
Spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Education, Malibongwe Mtima, said this school was on the list of the schools that would be fixed, and that a contractor had been appointed and would start this week.
“The management had made some arrangements for the learners to be grouped at the moment.
“They will use the classrooms that were not affected by the storm,” said Mtima.
