Phopho netball team, Momentum FC crowned champions

Momentum FC, from Matheko location and Phopho netball team, from New Payne, were crowned the champions of the third annual Cegcwane tournament.


Momentum FC, from Matheko location and Phopho netball team, from New Payne, were crowned the champions of the third annual Cegcwane tournament.

Momentum FC won on penalties against C Birds FC, while the Phopho netball team won against Cambridge Netball team.

This was the third year this tournament had taken place since its establishment back in 2019.

Their first tournament was held on April 18, 2019, and it was organised by Untshintsho Loluntu NPO.

This year, 26 soccer teams participated in this tournament and 18 netball teams took part.

The 2021 soccer champions, Vutha FC, were eliminated in the semi-finals by their rivals, C Birds FC, losing 1-0. The goal was scored by Zenzile Rhorhwana.

Speaking after the final match against C Birds FC, Momentum FC captain, Siviwe Ntsukumbini, said he was excited to be part of a winning team again.

In the 2021 tournament, Ntsukumbini played for that year’s champions, Vutha FC, who also come from Matheko location. That year, he was also selected as the player of the tournament.

“Last year I was playing for Vutha FC and we won the tournament, and again today I am part of the winning team. This motivates me a lot and the victory is for our Mathoko residents, especially the sports supporters.”

In netball, the Phopho netball team, from New Payne in Mthatha, were crowned the champions after a 14-12 victory against the Cambridge netball team, from Willowvale.

Phopho netball team captain, Sisanda Mazamisa, said she was delighted about the victory as it was their first time competing in this tournament and also the first trophy for the team this year.

The tournament was held at Cegcwane Sports Ground, outside Mthatha.
