The inaugural Pink Golf Day charity golf tournament, hosted by Total Energies Mthatha, at Mthatha Golf Club on Women’s Day (August 9), has managed to raise in excess of R19 000, which will be used to buy sanitary pads for young girls in schools in and around Mthatha.

Tournament host, Reece Channing of Total Energies Mthatha, has thanked those who participated in making the tournament a success, saying they were buoyed by the funds the golf tournament managed to raise, despite not meeting his minimum target of R25 000.

“We are encouraged by the support we received from various businesses that responded to our call to action and sent their teams to participate in the charity golf tournament. The funds raised, as promised, will be used to buy sanitary pads that we will distribute to identified disadvantaged schools in and around Mthatha,” Channing said.

More than 70 players, including United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa, participated in the inaugural golf tournament.

Channing said they hoped to make the tournament an annual event to raise money for different causes that shine the spotlight on women’s issues.

“The aim is that every year we will identify a need that women might have, like supporting local non-governmental organisations that are doing good work with abused women and children, and other initiatives,” Channing told Express, prior to hosting the tournament.

A steak night, where steaks were sold for R100 each, as part of the fund-raising initiatives, also formed part of the itinerary for the day, while the day was closed off with an after-party that included musical performances.
