Eight men were arrested and five firearms recovered within hours of a business robbery in Mbizana.
According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, it is alleged that at least
eight heavily armed unknown men, travelling in a white Toyota Corolla, targeted a
local business that was operating as a pension pay-out outlet in Kwandela
locality in Mbizana on Monday, May 9.
“The Post Office employees, who were manning a
satellite outlet, were held at gunpoint together with security officers.
Suspects managed to steal an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Nkohli.
The suspects fled in the Corolla and a grey Toyota Hilux
belonging to one of the suspects.
He added that police’s immediate response led to the arrest of five of the suspects not far from the scene.
Nkohli said that a preliminary investigation led to the
arrest of the three other suspects and the recovery of five firearms.
“The
second get-away vehicle that was stolen during a robbery was found abandoned a few kilometres away from the scene.”
Nkohli said the suspects were expected to appear before the Mbizana Magistrate’s Court today on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, commended police for their swift response.
