Police arrest three in connection with murder of Mbhashe Municipality councillor

The South African Police Service Serious and Violent Crime Unit has arrested three suspects believed to be involved in the murder of Mbhashe Local Municipality councillor Nomxolisi Nqwena two weeks ago.

Nqwena was shot and killed inside her car, on February 17, at Ngcingwane Administrative Area in Dutywa.

“After the case was opened, the investigating team started its work, and on March 8, they followed up on information that subsequently led to the arrest of three suspects aged 29, 36 and 41, respectively,” said Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.

“All male suspects are originally from Dutywa, and the murder weapon and a vehicle which was allegedly used in the commission of the offense were both recovered by the police.”

According to Kinana, one of the three suspects who allegedly hired a firearm to the hitmen was also arrested for possessing an unlicensed firearm and already appeared before Idutywa Magistrate court yesterday, March 9.

The other two suspects are expected to appear before Dutywa Magistrate Court today, March 10, on murder charges. Acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Zithulele Dladla, has welcomed the arrest and further appreciated the sterling work of the investigating team behind the arrests.
