Eastern Cape Police have launched a manhunt following the armed robbery of a police officer in the early hours of August 20, 2022, in Engcobo.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said that according to police reports, the police officer was on his way back from attending to a complaint.

“While driving back from the medical institution where he had dropped the victim, he was allegedly accosted by unidentified suspects. At gunpoint, the two suspects pulled him out and then drove off in the police vehicle. The member who escaped unhurt, called for assistance from the police station and was immediately rescued from the situation,” said Kinana.

The police vehicle was later found abandoned in a nearby forest known as Sigidi.

“SAPS members are currently searching for the suspects in and around the local villages.  A case of armed robbery is under investigation and no arrests have been made at this stage. Police are appealing to anyone who may have information about the whereabouts of the suspects to please make contact with the nearest police station or call the crime stop number 08600 10111,” said Kinana.
