The Department of Sport in the Eastern Cape, in partnership with MultiChoice, are planning to play a key role in sport development in Butterworth town and surrounding areas.

On Wednesday, the MEC for Sport, Fezeka Nkomonye, and MultiChoice executive head of corporate affairs, Collen Dlamini, visited the Mnquma area, where they had a meeting with stakeholders at Butterworth High School.

Among the stakeholders were representatives from schools, local teams and Hollywoodbets Super League side coach, Thembalethu Apleni, accompanied by players and team management.

The department, in partnership with MultiChoice, called the meeting to look at the possibility of building a multi-purpose sports field which would be utilised by several schools and local clubs around the Mnquma area.

Butterworth High School had been identified by stakeholders and the department as the place where this multi-purpose sports fields could be built, because it is central to everyone in the Mnquma area.

By building a multi-purpose sports field, with the help of MultiChoice, the plan was to revive sport at schools throughout the province.

The company will also build other multi-purpose sports fields in other areas in the Eastern Cape.

The company is also looking forward to broadcasting all school leagues on their sports channels.

Nkomonye was happy about the outcomes of the meeting with the stakeholders, and she said the aim of the initiative was to encourage schools to prioritise school sport.

Nkomonye had been on a drive to lobby the private sector to come on board and help deal with the infrastructure backlog in the province and MultiChoice responded well to her call.

As things stand, MultiChoice is finalising all the important processes that are needed before the start of the building phase of the project at Butterworth High School.
