A man (58) accused of raping a girl (4) briefly appeared before the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court yesterday, September 27.

He is believed to be the principal of a primary school in Ngcobo. He was arrested on September 18, after the case was opened on August 26, 2023.

The matter was postponed until October 4, 2023, for a bail application. He remains in custody,

According to SA Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the accused cannot be named because he has not yet pleaded.

“It is alleged that the rape incidents occurred over a period of time in the Ngxakaxha Administrative Area in Dutywa. It is believed that the victim was raped on several occasions. The circumstances surrounding these incidents are a part of the investigation,” said Nkohli.

Eastern Cape Education spokesperson, Mali Mtima said they will investigate the matter.

He said this act affects teaching and the profession and the Department of Education is custodians of the profession.

“We expect our teachers to be an example wherever they are, especially on matters affecting school children. We have to investigate and take proper action,” said Mtima.
