Gobizizwe Agricultural School principal, Tuletu Mbixane, from Mthatha, has appealed to other teachers to take part in the National Teaching Awards, stating that these awards create an opportunity for them to learn more.
These awards were held by the Department of Basic Education at Mandla Makupula Leadership Institute in East London, last week.
Through these awards, the DBE acknowledges the extraordinary efforts made by excellent teachers, often in very difficult conditions.
Mbixane won an award in the excellence in secondary leadership category.
“Even though I obtained position two, I am very proud because it was not an easy journey. Also it was my first time entering a competition, so I am very proud of myself. It was not easy because you had to explain all your achievements that you have achieved in your school,” said Mbixane.
She said she arrived in Gobizizwe in 2013, as the first principal. She said when she arrived, there were no classrooms at all, and they were using containers and shacks as classrooms, and two classrooms which they borrowed from neighbouring Ntshabeni Primary School.
“At that time, the parents wanted this school to be an agricultural school. I had to make all the efforts and plans to put it in the better place.
“I am proud now because I managed to fulfil their dream of being an agricultural school.”
