Private Jumpers FC from Gusi location have been crowned champions of the Khanyisa June 16 soccer tournament.
Jumpers won 2-1 against Manchester FC from Xhorhana, in front of a packed Khanyisa FC sports ground.
Jumper’s goals were scored by the young exciting young players, Aza Mncikanana and Abenathi Gcinani.
The tournament, which was sponsored by P. Hopisi Attorneys, was organised by young sports enthusiast, Wandile Sidelo. It was the first edition of the tournament.
The champions, Jumpers FC, walked away with R5 000 cash, a trophy and gold medals, while Manchester walked away with R2 500 and silver medals.
Jumpers FC’s captain, Velisa Mlala, said the team had only won one out of five of their preparation games before this tournament. However, they told themselves that they were going to be competitive in this tournament.
“We are happy that we won the tournament because it was not easy,” Mlala said.
Mlala said that the win was dedicated to their supporters, who came out in their numbers to support the team.
Meanwhile Manchester FC’s captain, Asanda Soganga, said they lost control of the game because they were scared of the Jumpers.
“We were not in control of the ball. Everyone was under pressure because we heard a lot about this team and I think that affected our game today,” Soganga said.
Individual awards for the tournament included:
Goalkeeper of the tournament: Siphelele Mavana from Manchester.
Young player of the tournament: Aza Mncikanana from Private Jumpers.
Top goal scores were both from Private Jumpers: Aza Mncikanana and Velisa Mlala with two goals each.
Player of the tournament: Velisa Mlala.
The tournament was held at Khanyisa FC sports ground in Kulalo location outside Elliotdale town.
