Qonce (formerly King Williams Town) author and academic, Dr Andile M-Afrika, recently introduced the second edition of his book, titled The Light That Lit Our Lives, to the Mthatha audience, during a launch held at Mthatha Arts Centre in Norwood on November 6.

The book, first published in 2011, documents the life and times of the late political activist and founder of the Black Consciousness Movement, Steve Biko, as well as his political and literature contributions during his lifetime.

The Light That Lit Our Lives – A tribute to Steve Biko, traces the last days of Biko, through the memories of those who knew him. Biko was killed in police detention on September 12, 1977.

M-Afrika, who grew up with and personally knew Biko, said the book is intended for everyone who wants to know more about Biko.

“I have always been fascinated by the political activism of Steve Biko; hence I saw the need to document it for those who wish to know more about the man and also for future generations. The book explores the political activism of Biko especially when he entered university,” M-Afrika said.

He said he has already published three other books on Biko, a novel, a book of Biko interviews and another titled SASO Newsletter, which takes its name from a newsletter Biko and his political comrades published after forming the South African Students Organization (SASO) in 1969.

M-Afrika’s second edition of The Light That Lit Our Lives is published by his own company, M-Afrika Research Institute.

The book can be purchased directly from the author by calling 076 809 5674 or sending an email to andile.mafrika@gmail.com at R250 per copy.

M-Afrika holds an MA in creative writing and a PhD in literature, both from Rhodes University. He is a researcher, writer, editor, publisher, historian, and activist.

His research interests are in history, literature, and politics.
