Community members from Gabazi Administrative Area in Qumbu celebrated Youth Day by fixing their own gravel road, as they believed that the Mhlontlo Local Municipality had failed to assist them.
They took two days to complete the project.
The first day was only for people with vehicles. The second day was for community members from different localities.
One of the community members, Nelson Vula, said they were doing this for the second time this year.
“We have tried to ask for help from the municipality but nothing has happened.
“What is painful is that they would want us to vote for them yet they know that they are not assisting us,” said Vula.
He said, instead of sitting at home and enjoying the holiday, they decided to fix their road because they were the ones who were struggling when travelling to town.
He said this was also affecting their children because they faced the same problem when going to school.
“Parents are tired of hiring bakkies to transport their children during rainy days because the scholar transport fails to take them to their homes due to bad access roads.”
He said the problem affected Gabazi, Godini, Mpindweni, Newstate and Sikhobeni locations.
Ward Councillor from Mhlontlo Local Municipality, Councillor Vuso Nondaka confirmed that the maintenance of this road would be done now.
“The road that will be maintained will be from Newstate location to Mpindweni location, then the road from Khaleni to Gabazi,” said Nondaka.
