The community of Vonqo location, in Dutywa, decided to stand together by donating money to fix their bridge that was damaged by heavy rains.

One of the community members, Mandisi Dayimani (76), said after they saw the damage, they decided to collect the money from their own pockets and bought cement and sand.

Each community member contributed R200. He said if they did not act swiftly, their children, who are attending schools at Upper Bolotwa Primary, Tubelihle Senior Secondary and Zanohlanga Primary, would have struggled to get to school.

“We have our WhatsApp group, where we discuss all the things that are happening in our area, so it was easy to inform the community members,” said Dayimani.

He added that they were still having another challenge of two other bridges that also needed fixing.

He said sometimes people had to stand up and do something for themselves, instead of waiting for the government.
