Cambridge Police Station Commander, Brigadier Pumla Mdlankomo, presented an early Christmas present to 80-year-old Makaya Futshane, of Jubisa location, in Tamara, outside Qonce, when she took it upon herself to help renovate his house and handed him the keys to his newly revamped house on December 7.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Mluleki Mbi, Mdlankomo was moved by the elderly man’s living conditions while in his area attending the funeral of a colleague in October this year.
“She was touched by the bad condition of the house and the furniture, as she nearly fell off the sofa she was sitting on, as she used Futshane’s house as the holding room for the funeral and she vowed to do something about the house. She immediately tasked the Tamara station commander, as well as the local CPF chairperson, to find out more information from the councillor about the family,” Mbi said.
“She then approached businesses like Chippa Holdings, Jesus is the Answer Ministries of Dr Makubalo, and Yiliwe Funeral Directors, who were more than willing to come on board. They visited the home and did an assessment and the work to revamp the house started,” added Mbi
After the completion of the revamp, the house was further fitted with furniture including brand new bedroom suites, a TV set with a stand, cupboards, a lounge suite, a fridge, a microwave, bedding and groceries.
In his response to the gesture, Futshane said he did not know that an angel could come in the form of a person, referring to the generosity displayed by Mdlankomo and that he would be forever grateful to her and her partners.
Mdlankomo said when the idea came to her, she had nothing in hand but knew that God would make it a reality.
She vowed to continue making improvements to the house and challenged both the Tamara and Punzana station commanders to give Futshane a warm Christmas dinner on Christmas day.
