Sasol League opening match promises to be tough derby

Ayakha Star’s Ladies, who finished last season’s Inland Sasol League in second position, will face the newly promoted Coastal United Ladies’ FC in their opening match of the season this coming Saturday.

Ayakha Star’s Ladies, who finished last season’s Inland Sasol League in second position, will face the newly promoted Coastal United Ladies’ FC in their opening match of the season this coming Saturday.

The two giants in women’s football in Mthatha last clashed in the league in 2019, when Ayakha Star’s Ladies won 4-0.

At the time, Coastal Ladies were relegated from the Sasol League to the SAFA OR Tambo regional league.

In February 2022, Coastal Ladies were promoted back to Sasol League after winning the provincial play-offs, which were held in Mthatha Stadium.

The return of Coastal Ladies to the Sasol League means Mthatha will have two teams this season competing at the Sasol Women’s League.

Both teams told Express that they are ready for the opening game of the season this weekend.

Ayakha Star’s captain, Sizipiwe Gwazela, said they had prepared enough for the match and the whole season.

“It’s the opening match of the season and also a derby. I think we have prepared enough,” said Gwazela.

The match will be held at the Rotary Stadium this coming Saturday at 15:00.
