Officials from the Eastern Cape Department of Education launched a Second Chance Matric programme at CHB Senior Secondary School in Ngqeleni in the OR Tambo coastal region, last week.

The aim of the launch was to formally introduce the Grade 12 class of 2022 to Second Chance Matrics and motivate them and teachers to work hard in order to achieve their goals and obtain the matric results.

The Eastern Cape Education head, Dr Naledi Mbude, said CHB Senior Secondary School was one of the schools that would host this programme, along with the Lusikisiki College of Education.

She said learners who wanted to upgrade their subjects would be allowed to do that in these centres.

“My duty is to make sure that these centres are operating in a good way.

“If they are not serving the purpose they will be closed. Teachers who will be teaching here are those who had shown us that they could get best results.

“Those teachers who had obtained 75% and above are the ones who will be allowed to teach in these centres. You must make sure that this centre is operating and be punctual when you are coming to attend your classes,” said Mbude. She urged learners to ensure that they focus on their studies and nothing else.

Some of the subjects that will be offered in these centres include mathematics, mathematics literacy, physical science, agricultural science, life sciences, etc.

The Mayor for Nyandeni Local Municipality, Councillor Zamekile Nondlevu, said the leadership of Nyandeni would make sure that they supported these children and would ensure that they get a better future.

One of the learners, Nandipha Sifo (19), said this was a great opportunity for them because they would manage to get better results and proceed to tertiary level.

“After I failed my matric, I did not know what to do and was very happy when I was told about this centre,” she said.
