A G4S security guard (40) is facing allegations of carjacking and kidnapping after a robbery at an ATM near Ntlaza in Libode.

The suspect was arrested by a multi-disciplinary team comprising the Mthatha Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, Tactical Response Team (TRT), Port St. Johns Crime Prevention, and Port St. Johns Crime Intelligence members on Saturday, March 1.

He was due to appear before the Port St. Johns Magistrate’s Court on 3rd March 2025.

According to Hawks spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, two G4S security guards, who were driving a Toyota Etios, were servicing a Capitec Automated Teller Machine (ATM) when their vehicle was allegedly bumped by a Volkswagen Polo.

“The guards stopped and checked the damages. It is alleged that a white Toyota Fortuner stopped next to the Etios, and armed suspects alighted from the Fortuner and instructed the guards to lie down on the road and disarmed them of their firearms.

“The suspects allegedly drove off in the Fortuner with the security guards covered in balaclavas. The suspects allegedly dropped off the guards near Ngqeleni in the forest,” said W.O.Mhlakuvana.

The police were activated to investigate the matter. The joint team discovered the G4S Etios in the Pantu area near Port St. Johns, with two occupants inside.

The suspects tried to flee from the police, but a few metres away, they abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. A chase ensued, with one suspect arrested, while his accomplice managed to escape.

Firearms and ATM keys were robbed during the incident. The ATM keys were recovered from the suspect.

According to W.O. Mhlakuvana, an intensive investigation established that the suspect is currently employed by G4S Cash Solutions based in Gauteng.

More suspects are at large, and the investigation continues.
