Eastern Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant General
Nomthetheleli Mene, has commended the good work of Lusikisiki police after they
arrested seven suspects, including a 72-year-old man, for possession of
unlicensed firearms, ammunition and illicit drugs.
The arrests were made during Operation Sikhona, an
intelligence driven operation conducted from April 19 to 20, which targeted
four localities in Lusikisiki to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms.
“During the operation a 22-year-old man was arrested in
possession of two unlicensed shotguns with no ammunition, a 29-year-old was
arrested in possession of an unlicensed shotgun with ammunition and a 28-year-old
was arrested in possession of an unlicensed revolver with ammunition.
“The three arrests were made at Hombe Location,” said police
spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli.
Nkohli said police made two other arrests during the
operation at Bovini locality where two men aged 59 and 72 were arrested for
each possessing unlicensed 9mm pistols with ammunition.
The sixth arrest was made at Dlibona locality under Dubhana
Administrative Area where a 32-year-old man was nabbed for being in possession
of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with no ammunition.
Police further arrested a 27-year-old man for possession of
illicit drugs valued around R500.
“Lusikisiki is one of the hotspot areas in the Eastern Cape.
It will remain on our radar until we see improvement in the crime situation,” said Mene in reaction to the arrests.
The seven arrested suspects were expected to appear before the
Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court yesterday, April 20, but no information was immediately
available on the outcome of their court appearance.
