OR Tambo District Municipality executive mayor Mesuli Ngqondwana has confirmed the arrival of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) team at the municipality, which will commence its investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption within the district municipality.

The SIU team, led by its head Advocate Lekgoa Mothibi, comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed Proclamation R80 0f 202, on July 30, authorising the investigation.

“We embrace the work that the SIU team will be embarking on, as we committed to the public and residents of the district that we will cooperate with the investigations and we will make all our staff members to cooperate with all the enquiries made by the investigation team,” said Ngqondwana.

Ngqondwana held a briefing session with the SIU team on Friday, September 16.

“We regard this as an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to clean governance as well as to the eradication of the culture of corruption within the institution and we view this investigation as yet another opportunity to advance that project,” Ngqondwana added.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago was not immediately available to comment on how long the investigation may take.
