Six suspects, aged
between 34 and 54, will appear before the Tsolo Magistrate’s Court on June 7 for allegations of attempted cash-in-transit robbery, numerous counts of
attempted murder and malicious damage to property.
According to Hawks
Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, it is alleged that in 2019 four guards from
Fidelity Cash Solutions were attacked by a group of suspects who trapped the
armoured vehicle with a chain of spikes on the road which damaged the tyres.
“It is further alleged that the suspects fired at both the armoured and escort
vehicles near Langeni Forest in Tsolo. Fidelity security guards returned fire
and the suspects fled. No money was taken and no injuries were reported during
the crossfire, however, the shootings resulted in serious damages to the
Fidelity Guard vehicles,” said Mgolodela.
She added that four suspects, who are
already in custody for numerous cases of police killings, car-hijackings,
illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and other cash-in-transit heists, were allegedly linked to the incident and more charges were added on June 5, 2022.
“Further investigation led to the arrest of two additional
suspects who were arrested in Mqanduli and in Mbhashe Municipality area. The duo
will be joining their four alleged accomplices when they appear at Tsolo
Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.”
The Provincial Head Major, General Mboiki Obed
Ngwenya, commended the joint effort of East London based Serious Organised Crime
Investigation (SOCI) team of the Hawks, Mthatha National Intervention Unit
(NIU) and Public Order Policing (POP) in executing a successful
operation.
