POTCHEFSTROOM – A 26-year-old man’s decision to confess his motives for murder on social media platforms proved to be his downfall, leading to his swift arrest by North West Police in the early hours of Friday morning.

The suspect, who cannot be named until he appears in court, allegedly murdered his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend Kgaugelo Marota after which he attempted to kill his current girlfriend, before taking to social media to explain his “evil deeds” – a move that ultimately sealed his fate.

Following the attacks on Thursday evening, the suspect posted his reasons for the violent crimes on various social media platforms, providing crucial evidence that assisted Makapanstad Police in tracking him down to Carousel View, near Maubane, where he was arrested on Friday, 22 August.

The tragic sequence of events began on Thursday, 21 August when Marota’s lifeless body was discovered at a tavern in Maubane village. The young woman had suffered multiple stab wounds and was declared dead at the scene by Emergency and Medical Rescue Services.

Investigations revealed that after allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend, the suspect returned to his residence where he launched a second vicious attack on his current 20-year-old girlfriend, stabbing her multiple times. The victim was rushed to a local hospital where she remains under medical treatment.

Police spokesperson Col. Adélé Myburgh, said that following theses incidents, the suspect posted the reasons behind his “evil deeds” on social media.

The suspect is expected to make his first appearance before the Temba Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 25 August.
