THE Female World Foundation hosted its first-ever ladies’ soccer tournament this past weekend and six local female teams participated.

According to one of the organisers, Anele Somagaca (24), the main objective of the tournament was to develop ladies’ soccer in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape Province.

“We want to create a space where young girls from rural areas can dream, and give them assurance that their dreams are valid and they can do whatever they put their minds to. We want to create a space where youth can learn something that can change their lives,” she said.

Somagaca said their intention is to see one of the rural soccer stars playing for Banyana Banyana one day.

The tournament was attended by a number of scouts from the province which included Wezo Ndiki, from Cumakala Ladies, a team which plays in the Sasol League.

Khwezi Ladies’ FC was crowned the champion of the tournament after beating Golden Ladies FC 1-0 on Friday.

Currently, the Eastern Cape has only one team participating in the national league, Thunderbirds Ladies’ FC, so rural sports enthusiasts are doing everything within their capacity to develop women’s football in rural areas to expose rural talent.

The tournament was held at Tsomo Mission.
