LIBODE – A male suspect (34) was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs during intensified Safer Festive Season operations in the O.R. Tambo District.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, the arrest was executed by the Mthatha-based O.R. Tambo District Task Team during an intelligence-driven operation in Moyeni locality, Marubeni A/A, Libode, in the early hours of this morning at about 03:00.
“During the operation, police recovered an unlicensed AK-47 assault rifle with ammunition in the suspect’s possession,” he said. “In addition, the suspect was found with dagga bompies, sachets of Tik, and an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be proceeds from drug dealing activities.”
Matyolo said that the suspect failed to produce a licence for the firearm and ammunition, whereupon he was immediately apprehended and will appear before the Libode Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 06 November.
“He will face charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, as well as possession and dealing in drugs.”
The O.R. Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, applauded the members for their vigilance and commitment.
“This arrest is a clear indication that we are tightening our grip on criminal activities in the district, especially as we intensify Safer Festive Season operations. We will continue to ensure that our communities are safer and that those who choose to engage in crime are brought to book,” said Modishana.
