Sifiso Moyo (25) from Ndakeni locality in Mount Ayliff, who struggled to get a job as a teacher, has started his own bakery called Bhaka Like Me Bakery.
He said that he completed a Bachelor of Education at Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in 2020. According to him, he then got a contract as an Education Assistant (EA) which ended after six months.
“I tried to apply for teachers’ posts but I did not have any luck. While I was still frustrated, I had an idea that I must bake scones at home and sell them to my community, and at that time I only had R200 in my pocket to buy ingredients,” said Moyo.
According to him, he was assisted by his mother who also loved baking.
He said that he used to sell scones in his community, but as the time went by he started selling them in town.
“I had to hire someone to assist me because it was hard for me to balance my time between baking and going to town to sell. I then heard about the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), that it can assist me to buy equipment.”
Moyo said that after he had got all the information, he applied for assistance to acquire the equipment for baking bread.
According to him, now he is focusing more on baking bread because he does not have his own transport.
He said it is hard to do this kind of business without transport, because he struggles to deliver orders to customers, but he is trying his best.
He said having his own business was always his dream. “For now, I have put teaching aside to focus on growing my business, so that maybe one day I can get a space to run my own bakery.”
