Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Nonceba Kontsiwe, has committed to ensuring the quick issuing of title deeds in the province as part of restoring the dignity of low-cost housing beneficiaries.
This as the department commits to tightening working relations with municipalities in the province during the registration of projects, to ensure a smooth running in the issuing of title deeds.
On 5 July, Kontsiwe issued 211 title deeds to Chithwa Location residents at EmaXesibeni, which falls under the uMzimvubu Local Municipality.
The title deed handover formed part of the department’s Nelson Mandela Month commemorations.
Among the beneficiaries was 90-year-old Nombulelo Mlenzana. The teary Gogo Mlenzana couldn’t contain her excitement.
“I have been long waiting for this day. I wish my late husband was still alive. Now I can proudly say this is my house. I’m so happy,” she said.
The department is targeting to hand over at least 8 000 title deeds during the current financial year. Kontsiwe said the department would ensure that these targets were realised.
“We have an obligation to ensure that our beneficiaries receive official documentation to their homes. This is why we will work hand-in-hand with municipalities. This programme is one of our key priorities as it speaks to the restoration of our people’s dignity.” said Kontsiwe.
The department has implemented the Title Deed Restoration Programme as part of tracking beneficiaries and fastening the issuing of title deeds in the province.
