WHILE preparing for the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) was a transformative journey for Kwakhanya Gwadiso, with the help in hard times from his family and music coach, conductor and teacher he was able to grow both mentally and vocally to face the challenge.

Gwadiso (16) is a Grade 12 learner at Holy Cross High School at Southridge in Mthatha. He was recently crowned the national champion in the solo tenor category of the competition.

Gwadiso has shown his love and ability to sing from a young age, as he confirmed to Mthatha Express that he started singing when he was six years old. “Preparing for the SASCE competition was a transformative journey. Initially, I was excited, but nervous, but as I set goals and worked towards them, I faced challenges like vocal strain and self-doubt.

“However, with the help of my music conductor, vocal coach and music teacher at Holy Cross High School, Mr Mkharu Gobingca, my local vocal coach and my supportive family at large, I pushed through and grew both vocally and mentally,” he said.

The tenor soloist said it was at this stage that he felt confident to face his competitors. Connecting with a song emotionally, Gwadiso said, was important in delivering a song.

“I gained valuable performance experience. I was able to carefully select and prepare my songs and, most importantly, I was in a position to develop techniques to manage my nerves. So, I felt confident, prepared, and I was eager to showcase my talent,” Gwadiso said.

“I’m passionate about singing, and aim to make a career out of it,” he said. “I’m currently taking lessons, performing at local events, and networking with industry professionals. I understand the challenges, but I’m dedicated to pursuing my dream. Singing is a huge passion of mine. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember.”

Gwadiso has taken further steps to strengthen his chances of a music career by being involved in extra lessons with his Diocesan church choir. “I would say that my strength lies in my ability to connect emotionally with a song. I’m inspired by artists like the late Luciano Pavarotti, and I enjoy singing opera music,” he said.

His music teacher said Gwadiso was a dedicated and diligent learner who possessed a rare combination of natural talent, dedication, and passion – making him a joy to teach.

“His talent was evident from the start, but it wasn’t until he sang a solo in our school choir that I realised the full extent of his ability. The journey towards the competition was an incredible experience for both of us. As his teacher, mentor, and vocal coach, I witnessed him grow, not only as a singer, but also as a person. It was a journey of overcoming self-doubt, building confidence, and learning to embrace his unique sound,” he said.

Gwadiso had also learnt to balance his school work, other responsibilities, and his passion for singing. Gobingca said in times of difficulty, he reminded Gwadiso of his strengths, past achievements and the progress he had made, helping him regain confidence.

“This achievement brings pride and recognition to Holy Cross High School, showcasing the talent and dedication of our learners, and creative arts department. And also this success story can be used to secure funding, resources, or partnerships to further support our music programme. Music education is vital in our schools and this SASCE competition demonstrates the impact it can have on young lives. SASCE competition is more than just a contest, it is also a celebration of the human spirit, creativity, and the power of music to bring us together,” Gobingca said.

He thanked God for the experience of the competition adding that winning was humbling.

“This win is not just s testament to our own efforts, but also a reminder of the divine guidance and support that has been with us through this journey. I am truly humbled and thankful,” he said.
