Eastern Cape Transport and Community Safety MEC, Xolile Nqatha has commended police for arresting three men accused of the gruesome murder of Spaza shop owner, Zoleka Gantana (57) and her assistant Kholosa Mpunga (27).
Themba Dingela (50), Mandla Qosho (45) and Siyanda Makeleni (44) briefly appeared before the East London Magistrate’s Court yesterday. They were remanded in custody.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, confirmed that the case was remanded to Friday, August 18, for bail application arrangements.
Both deceased were abducted during a robbery at Gantana’s spaza shop on Sunday, July 9, in Ncerha, Kidds Beach.
Police discovered their dismembered bodies, which were burnt beyond recognition.
Nqatha and the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, were among the people who attended this case.
Nqatha said this is the second gruesome murder after Nosicelo Mtebeni was also brutally murdered in East London in August 2021.
“We wish to take this opportunity to convey our message of condolences to the families for this loss and wish to express our deepest appreciation for the work done by members of SAPS who have ensured that those who have done this gruesome act are brought to book,” said Nqatha.
He had condemned violence against women and children in the strongest possible terms and has called upon communities to collaborate with police to fight Gender Based Violence and Femicide.
