THUNDERBIRDS Ladies from Butterworth continue to struggle in the Hollywoodbets Super league as they won two out of the 20 games they played so far this season.

Over the weekend Butterworth team, Thunderbirds Ladies, have returned to league action after the Women’s World Cup, and they were hoping to resume their season on a positive note.

Their opponents in the Eastern Cape derby, Gqeberha team City Lads, were equal to the task as they beat Butterworth 1–0 at home at the Gelvandale Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides went to the EC derby targeting maximum points, so that they could improve their log standings as they were lying at the bottom of the Hollywoodbets Super League table.

After Saturday’s league results, City Lads, had improved their log standings from position number 13 to 12, with 17 points in the 21 games they played so far this season.

Meanwhile, Coach Thembalethu Apleni’s ladies from Butterworth still occupy position number 15 in the log standings, with nine points in 20 games.

So far this season Apleni’s team have won two games, drawn three, and if they wanted to escape relegation, they need to start winning their games.

They are currently sitting in a dangerous position in the log standings, including Ma-Indies Ladies who occupied bottom position – number 16, with six points in 21 games.

Both bottom teams will need to perform better in the 10 remaining league fixtures if they want to escape relegation.

During the FIFA break last month, when the Women’s World Cup was playing, Thunderbird Ladies managed to hold open trials just to select players so that they could beef up their squad for the remaining league fixtures.

Even other teams in the Hollywoodbets Super league, like defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, were busy strengthening their squad as they signed Ngcobo-born, Kholosa Biyana, from University of the Western Cape.

The next two games for Apleni’s troops are against the log leaders University of the Western Cape FC away and University of Pretoria FC at home.
