FORMER colleagues of the retired OR Tambo district manager of the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development, Nomsa Titus (61), have used words such as courteous, noble, and diplomatic to describe her character during her retirement ceremony, held at the Savoy Hotel in Mthatha on June 17.
Titus had served as the district manager for two decades, having been appointed to the role in 2000, and retained the position until her retirement from public service on April 30, 2020. Her career in the social work profession started in the mid-1970s, at the then Transkei homeland’s Public Service Commission, where she started as a counselling officer.
“Growing up, I looked up to many of the people who were either nurses or teachers but, one day while in my home town of Matatiele, I saw a lady, a rare sight then, driving a car and was curious to know what she was doing for a living. She told me she was a social worker and told me the kind of work she was doing. I decided on that day that I also wanted to be a social worker,” Titus said.
Titus obtained her BA Social Work degree at the University of Fort Hare in 1975.
Titus said she was currently studying theology through correspondence and planned to use that knowledge in her spiritual upliftment initiatives she has been involved in since retiring from public service.
She is also planning to establish a consultancy on life coaching and employee wellness.
Titus has cited solid working relationships with non-governmental organisations in the OR Tambo District, as well as successes in programmes, such as child and mother integrated nutrition programmes, as some of the milestones that made her enjoy her job while in the public service employ.
