Two dead, many injured in crash between bus and fuel tanker on N2

At least two people are confirmed dead in an accident this morning involving a fuel tanker and a long distance bus on the N2 near Kwelera between East London and Kei Bridge


At least two people are confirmed dead in an accident this morning involving a fuel tanker and a long distance bus on the N2 near Kwelera between East London and Kei Bridge.

According to Unathi Binqose, spokesperson for the Department of Transport, the accident occurred around 09:20 today, March 21 when a City Liner bus with passengers heading towards East London collided with a fuel tanker travelling the opposite direction.

“The tanker caught fire after the crash. Two people were declared dead on the scene while others sustained injuries. Search, rescue and recovery personnel remain on the scene to check if there aren’t any more survivors trapped in the wreckage or anything else they may have missed,” Binqose said.

The circumstances around the cause of accident is still unknown as the scene is currently still under investigation. 

At least 18 people were injured and they were transported to Frere Hospital.

“The accident has resulted in the complete closure of the road as the tanker caught fire after the crash. Motorists are advised to take instructions from law enforcement officers on the scene or use alternative routes.”
