The mob justice related incident that left two people dead in the Mbabalane Locality on Friday, April 7 at approximately 22:00, resulted in the arrest and detention of ten suspects at Port St Johns Police Station.

Police in Port St Johns are investigating two counts of murder after two learners from Majali Technical High School were fatally shot at Siqhozameni Locality, Majola Administrative Area in Port St Johns on April 21. 

According to provincial Department of Education spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, his department was shocked to learn that two learners aged 20 and 22 were fatally shot on April 21. 

He said the learners were shot on their way home after visiting their friends from school from the local area. 

“The bullets were allegedly fired at the two learners as they walked past the Majola Tea Plantation,” said Mtima. 

He said the motive for the shooting is unknown. 

According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, on April 21 at about 21:00 police were summoned to a complaint at a house near the Tea Plantation at Siqhozameni Locality. 

“At the scene, police found two men with several gunshot wounds,” said Nkohli. 

He further said circumstances surrounding the incident form part of the investigation. 

Nkohli said the names of the deceased are being withheld until the formal identification process is concluded.  

MEC for Education, Fundile Gade has sent his heartfelt condolences to both families, while the Acting Head of Department, Dr? Soyisile Nuku has been dispatched to visit the families accompanied by the district contingent to pay respect to the families of the deceased.
