SAPS displayed prompt response in the following information that led to two suspects being fatally shot in a shootout between suspects and SAPS.

The incident took place on November 11 on the N2 near the Mhlakulo Administrative area outside Tsolo.

According to SAPS spokesperson, Siphokazi Mawisa, “Members attached to the Tactical Response Team (TRT) pounced on robbers who were allegedly on a mission to commit a cash-in-transit robbery in the Eastern Cape. Police followed information regarding a Polo Vivo allegedly involved in cash-in-transit robberies in the province and KZN province that was driving in the direction of Eastern Cape to Mthatha.”

Members spotted the vehicle and stopped it with the intention of searching it on the N2. Upon the vehicle coming to a stop, a shootout ensued between the suspects and the police. Mawisa added that two suspects were fatally injured during the shooting.

“Upon searching, Police recovered two unlicensed firearms (a pistol and a revolver) in their possession, which they used in the shooting,” she said.

Cases of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition were opened for investigation. The case of an inquest will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
