Two learners from a school in Tsolo were swept away by a
flooded river that they were trying to cross on their way home from school.
Chulumanco Shumani (14) and Lutho Khuzani (17) from KT
Mchasa Senior Secondary School were swept away by a strong tide of the flooded
Mapolisa river in the Mahlubini location on March 8.
Education Spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, confirmed that
both the Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners were trying to cross a river with a
collapsed bridge about 6 kilometres away from school.
“Police divers were called to the scene to search/comb river
for the bodies, and also parents were informed of this incident. Unfortunately
the first and second day’s search went in vain. Police were assisted by locals
and other stakeholders,” said Mtima.
He added that both bodies were later found by the South
African Police Divers.
According to him the district provided the school learners and educators
with psychosocial support and they are also receiving counselling as arranged
by the district office. He said these sessions started yesterday, March 10.
People closely related to the children are also receiving
counselling.
The MEC or Education, Fundile Gade sent his condolences to
the bereaved families.

family will find solace in God during this trying time of their lives,” said
