THE USSA national basketball team is expected to compete against teams from various countries in the African University Sport Basketball tournament, which is expected to take place in November.

Four players from Walter Sisulu University, namely Giovanni Jafta, Olebogeng Matabane, Keatlegile Ramorwesi and Sandisiwe Mbiza, were selected during the USSA Basketball 2021 Championships, held in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) last weekend.

The 16 teams from across the country participated in the USSA games.

WSU’s basketball team played seven games and won four, in both the male and female categories.

WSU were ranked ninth in the tournament, which means that they automatically qualify for the 2022 USSA games.

The WSU coach, Sinoma Nkohla, said the technical team was thrilled to have four players selected for the national team.

“We were fortunate enough to have two men and two women selected for the national team and further have one player who was selected for the All Star team, which consists of the best players in the tournament,” said Nkohla.

The coach, who started his coaching career in 2016, said he was impressed by the team’s achievement during the tournament and wished the four players all best in the USSA Basketball national team.

Nkohla said this achievement would motivate other players to work harder.

He further thanked everyone who contributed in the success of the players and the entire WSU basketball team.
