Members of the donation campaign from Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Mthatha donated food parcels to 13 students from the campus, who do not receive NSFAS assistance or bursaries.
According to the founder of this campaign, Luthando Mzobe, they saw a student who was struggling to make ends meet on social media, so they decided to do something.
“We asked for donations from other students, and we managed to raise a total of R5 000, which we used to buy groceries for 13 students who are also facing the same problem.
“We thank all those who trusted us with their money, although it’s no longer easy to trust people. They decided to have faith in us with the hope of saving our fellow brothers and sisters from hunger,” he said.
Mzobe said this initiative started last Wednesday and was acknowledged by the members of the student representative council (SRC) of the school and the staff of the institution.
The spokesperson for WSU, Yonela Tukwayo, said it was very encouraging to see students coming up with solutions to problems that they face.
She said their SRC was operating on the ground and they see and deal with the plight of students on a daily basis and she applauded them for taking steps to solve challenges in such a pro-active and impactful way.
“In reality, the university cannot do everything, although we try. We currently sit with R1 billion in student debt and this is money that should be going towards alleviating the various problems we face as a university,” said Tukwayo.
