WATCH | Protesters demand Nyandeni mayor’s reinstatement

Protesters have blockaded entry to municipal offices in Libode, calling for ousted mayor Zamekile Nondlevu to be reinstated to his position.

Protesters, calling themselves concerned citizens from all 32 wards of the Nyandeni Local Municipality, have blockaded entry to municipal offices in Libode, calling for ousted mayor Zamekile Nondlevu to be reinstated to his position.

Nondlevu was removed from his position during a council meeting on April 20 after a motion without notice to have him removed as mayor was passed by the council.

He is accused of having undermined the municipal council resolution by stalling the process to interview candidates for the position of municipal manager.

One of the leaders of the protest action, Sonwabile Qupha, says they want the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, to come and fix the leadership problems at the municipality.

“We want Minister Dlamini-Zuma to come and reinstate Nondlevu to his position as mayor and remove the council speaker Mcebisi Mtobela and council chief whip Nomnikelo Yehana, whom we view as being at the centre of the decision to remove the mayor from his position,” Qupha said.

Municipal spokesperson, Ncebakazi Kholwane, was not immediately available to comment on how the protest action has affected municipal operations.
