The spokesperson for Walter Sisulu University (WSU), Yonela Tukwayo, has indicated that the damage which occurred during a fire in the admission office in WSU main campus last week would not affect application or registration processes, as they are done online only.

She said the incident took place in the evening of January 9, 2022. “Because of the swift response by campus security and the municipal Fire Department, the damage was limited to just one office. Investigators are still establishing the cause of the fire,” said Tukwayo.

She said the damage had not been quantified yet but furniture and electronic gadgets were destroyed in the fire. She confirmed that there were no injuries.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, confirmed this incident. He said an inquiry docket case had been opened at Mthatha Central South African Police Services.

“Fire fighters of OR Tambo District were summoned and attended to the fire. Only one of the 300 offices was affected. No arrests have been made yet, and the investigation continues,” said Kinana.
