Walter Sisulu University (WSU) confirmed the passing of a first-year student from their Ibika Campus in Butterworth.
She was found dead by her fellow student outside a local tavern not far from Campus recently.
According to a statement issued by the Spokesperson for Walter Sisulu University, Yonela Tukwayo, the victim was studying towards a National Diploma in Civil Engineering.
Tukwayo said according to the student’s friends, it was just after 22:00 when they decided to go look for her as she had not returned from the bathroom for over 10 minutes.
“Walter Sisulu University remains shocked and regretful that women, locally and the world over, continue to look over their shoulders even amongst fellow students and community. The University condemns acts of violence of any nature, on and off campus.
“Violence against women and children has reached unprecedented proportions that should be a great concern to everyone,” said Tukwayo.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana confirmed that the student was found dead in the Township. He said police were alerted to the incident by members of the public.
“It is not clear what was used to murder the student. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation. No arrest has been made at this stage. Police are investigating a murder case and the investigation continues,” said Kinana.
